DURHAM — Walter William Johnson, 90, was called to his final resting place after a very full life, March 7, 2016. Despite his declining health Walter remained at the family home cared for by his loving daughter, Amanda and being entertained by her 3 year old son, his first grandson, Aries, until he was moved to the Hospice House for his final days.

Walter was born in Stow, MA., Sept. 27, 1925 to Ture and Bertha (aka Sally Nydahl) Johnson, being the 4th of 5 children. He was raised on the family farm and learned early in life the value of hard work.

As a young man Walter joined the Merchant Marines. Upon leaving the Merchant Marines Walter began working as a carpenter in the construction industry. In the late 1960’s Walter moved to Freeport Maine where he purchased a farm. Although Walter was employed in the construction industry he never forgot his roots, embraced his love of farming and raising animals, and always maintained a farm as a hobby and lifestyle. When Walter suffered a major work injury and became disabled, he still had his farm to keep him busy. In the mid 1980’s Walter moved to Durham, Maine where he kept his farm going until his declining health forced him to retire.

Walter enjoyed his dogs and cats, liked gardening, raising animals, and loved to talk and reminisce about his childhood and antics as a young man. He loved to spend time with his grandson Aries and would often brag to visitors about him. In January Walter was very excited to welcome the birth of his new grandson William, born to his son Ture and fiancée Gabrielle Dunn. Walter’s grandsons were his pride and joy, providing much needed entertainment and comfort during his final months.

Walter is predeceased by his parents and his sisters Anna and Astrid. He is survived by his brother George Johnson of Clinton, Iowa and his brother Fred Johnson and his wife Jacki of Novato, California, a nephew, several nieces, his daughter Amanda and her son Aries of Durham, Maine, a son-in-law Josh Holman of Freeport Maine, his son Ture Johnson and his fiancée Gabrielle Dunn and their son William of Durham/Auburn Maine.
