TOPSHAM — Henry E. Hahnel, 93, of 26 Eastern Terrace Ln. died Friday, April 8, 2016 at Freeport Nursing Home in Freeport Maine.

He was born in Lewiston, Feb. 26, 1923, the son of Fred Hahnel and birth Mother Martha Wenzel Hahnel and later raised by Ruby Berry.

He graduated from Lewiston High School and completed General Basic Engineering at the University of New Hampshire and served in the U.S. Army in combat as an engineer in Germany during WWII.

Mr. Hahnel was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, first delivering mail by train throughout New England and ended his career as an accountant in the Portland Post Office, as he was recognized for his math skills as young man.

He came to Topsham to live in 1945 and later lived with his niece, Joyce Levasseur and her husband Lou in late 1950’s.

He enjoyed playing pinochle and poker with his friends. His passion in life was sponsoring kids in many youth activities and enjoyed golf, baseball and softball.

He is survived by his brother, Fred Hahnel of Bath; several nieces, and many grand and great grand nieces and nephews.
