Library offers consumer series

Starting this week, Thursday, April 21, at 6:30 p.m., the Scarborough Public Library will kick off its Senior Series – three different programs designed to provide important consumer information specific to older adults and their families.

This week, Andrew Grover, with Bangor Savings Bank, will present a program on senior financial fraud and will discuss strategies to safeguard personal and financial information.

Then, on Wednesday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m., Paul Doherty, with the Southern Maine Agency on Aging, will present a program on Medicare fraud. He will discuss the importance of protecting your Medicare number and basic rules to follow when dealing with health-care providers and pharmacies.

And, on Thursday, May 26, at 6:30 p.m., Jennifer Minkowitz, also with the Agency on Aging, will present a program on Advanced Health Care Planning.

Garden work day

The Scarborough Community Garden group will hold a spring work day to help ready the garden plots for planting on Saturday, April 23, from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

The garden is located at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church on Route 1 in Oak Hill.

Volunteers are asked to bring their own tools, including rakes, shovels and work gloves. The work will include spreading compost, turning the soil and planting early crops. See www.scarboroughcommunitygarden.org for more information.

Earth Day cleanups

In celebration of Earth Day, the Fort Williams Park Foundation in Cape Elizabeth and the Maine Audubon Society in Scarborough are holding spring cleanup events on Saturday, April 23. Volunteers are needed to help with both events.

In Cape, the cleanup will run 9-11 a.m. Meet at the Portland Head Light. Trash bags will be provided. In Scarborough, meet at the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center at 9 a.m.

Volunteers are asked to bring their own work gloves and to dress appropriately. Trash bags and trash removal will be provided by the town. See www.maineaudubon.org/find-us/scarborough-marsh for more information, including how to sign up.

In addition to the marsh cleanup, Project GRACE will also be holding a food drive to collect staple items for local families in need. Canned and dry goods or grocery gift cards will be gladly accepted.

Naturalist training

Next week, on Wednesday and Thursday, April 27 and 28, the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center will hold volunteer naturalist training sessions, 9:30 a.m.-noon.

Volunteers are needed to lead nature explorations Monday through Friday for groups of all ages at the Scarborough Marsh. Teen driving expo

The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety will host its annual Teen Driving Expo at The Maine Mall in South Portland on Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, includes demonstrations, a mock crash and more. According to the highway safety bureau, the leading cause of death for teenagers is car crashes.

Lego day at library

The South Portland Public Library will host its monthly Lego’s program on Saturday, April 23, at 10:30 a.m. Kids ages 5 and up are welcome to build, create, socialize and explore. Call 767-7660 or see www.southportlandlibrary.com for more information.

CEHS fundraiser

Rudy’s on the Cape will donate money to the sailing club at Cape Elizabeth High School for each small or large pizza purchased on Monday, April 25, from 3-8 p.m. The club will also have a display table and raffle items available. Tickets are $1 each or $5 for six.

All-school choral concert in Cape

The Cape Elizabeth School Department will offer its annual all-chorus concert for students in grades 4-12 on Thursday, April 28, at 7 p.m. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the cafetorium at Cape Middle. Email [email protected] for more information.

At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, the South Portland Public Library will hold its monthly Lego’s day.

The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center is looking for volunteers to lead nature walks this spring and summer. Training will be provided.
