KENNEBUNK — A heavy offensive attack helped the Kennebunk girls lacrosse team blow past visiting York 14-2 Wednesday evening.

The Rams were led by senior captain Jenny Bush, who scored six goals in the contest .

Bush was not only proud of her performance, but gave credit to her teammates in the win.

“I think we played really well together and that was our focus all week. We wanted to play together instead of seven individual players and I think we executed that today,” said Bush. “It felt really good to come out strong in our first home game. (York) has put a really good team on the field recently so it was good to win.”

Kennebunk coach Annie Barker was also pleased with the way her team played together and scored from multiple angles.

“The nice part about it is that we had (six) players score today. That is what we want to do so they can’t just focus on just somebody,” said Barker. “We’re trying to have everybody contribute … it happened today and I think it’s going to continue to happen.”

Barker believed that the team’s offensive success stemmed from the Rams winning the possession battle in the 50 minutes.

“Winning the draw – having possession of the ball,” said Barker. “We went straight to our ball carriers and we didn’t hesitate, our goal was go, go, go.”

Having familiarity with York’s defensive scheme was also an advantage, according to Bush.

“(York) plays a lot of man-zone, which is the defense we played last year, so we were familiar with it. We knew we would have to send a lot of cutters through the middle and we were able to execute and break their defense,” said Bush.

The Rams’ offense took off from the getgo, thanks to four goals in the opening six minutes.

Kennebunk continued to dominate in the first half, closing out the first 25 minutes with a 9-2 lead, The Rams received five goals from five players, including five from Bush.

York was unable to slow down the Kennebunk attack in the second half and were shut out 5-0 to close out the game.

The Rams finished with six goals from Bush, three from Kyra Schwartzman and two from Gabby Fogg. Kathryn Ross and Hallie Schwartzman each added goals as well.

York’s goal scorers were Alexandra Lawlor and Alana Lauersen.

Barker also complimented her defense and goaltending in the win.

“Bella (Kudas) did a good job in the cage and our defense is strong. We played strong defense on them and caused them to turn the ball over and that is what we practiced over and over again,” said Barker.

“It definitely gets us hyped up a lot because we have been waiting to have a big game. We can only get better now and we are ready for Wayneflete next week.”
