SACO — The Thornton Academy softball team fired on all cylinders against visiting Massabesic Wednesday afternoon, winning 19-2 in five innings.
Although the Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead in the first off an RBI double from Lacey Bean, the Trojans dominated the rest of the way.
TA coach John Provost felt his team’s offensive consistency was key in the win.
“They just hit 1-to-9 up the lineup, they were just hitting,” said Provost. “They bounced back immediately after falling behind 1-0 in the first and they just started hitting the ball really well.”
The Trojan attack began with a leadoff home run in the first inning from Libby Pomerleau. Maizie Lee later hit a two-run double and Jenica Botting added another RBI to give TA a 4-1 lead.
The Mustangs pitching ran into trouble in the second, allowing a leadoff double followed by three walks to allow a runner home. The offensive highlight came in the following at-bat, when Botting hit a grand slam to extend the Trojan lead to 9-1.
Although the Mustangs added a run on a passed ball in the top half of the third, the TA bats showed up once again, beginning with an RBI triple from Pomerleau. TA added another run on a passed ball to take an 11-2 lead into the fourth.
The Trojans had another big inning in the bottom of the fourth, scoring eight runs to put the game out of reach for the Mustangs.
TA’s Hayden Campbell and Kaylee Burns hit RBI doubles in the innings, along with a two-run shot from Hannah Collins. Botting also added an RBI single.
Louisa Colucci followed up her recent no-hitter with an impressive outing. Colucci pitches five innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out six batters.
Provost was once again happy with Colucci’s performance, however hopes to see his team continue to make adjustments in the field.
“I told them that even when we score 19 runs we can still find something to work on. We made a few errors that would have been costly in close games, we also had a few base running mistakes, but overall I am really happy with the performance. I’m going to say the same thing though, we need to play better defense,” said Provost.
With a young squad, TA’s success will be determined by the contributions from the freshmen and sophomore players.
Provost has been pleased with the progression of the young players so far in the early season.
“We have been progressing, I’m happy with the progress. We have four freshman starters so if we just continue to get better each game we will be fine,” said Provost. “When you get production from your freshman it makes things a lot easier, especially when you get hits from the seventh and eighth spot.”
Sarah Guimond got the start for Massabesic. Guimond pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs on six hits while striking out three. Sarah Howe pitched 1/3 of an inning, giving up six runs on three hits, while Grace Tutt pitched the final 2/3 of the fourth, giving up four runs on two hits and striking out one.
