Hear ‘Sacred Stories’

Come to hear the Sacred Stories of Southern Maine Community College students who are refugees, asylum seekers, immigrants and international students as they share their most challenging and intimate accounts of their lives on Wednesday, May 4, at 3:15 p.m. at the South Portland City Hall, at 25 Cottage Road.

The free event is for ages 14 and older. Seating is limited so arrive early.

The Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth on Thursday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m., will host a presentation by Jeff Runge, a research scientist at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute.

Stephen Bennett and Federico Giovine, from Cape Elizabeth High School, have been selected to show their short films as part of the Portland Youth Film Festival’s Red Carpet Night event, which will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, at the Abromson Center, located at 88 Bedford St. on the Portland campus of the University of Southern Maine.

The South Portland Lions Club will host its annual Spring Dance on Saturday, April 30, 8 p.m.-midnight, at the VFW Hall, located at 50 Peary Terrace. Tickets are $10 per person or $15 for two.

The dance benefits the South Portland Historical Society, the South Portland Food Cupboard and Camp Sunshine. The event includes a cash bar, raffle prizes and a 50-50 drawing. For tickets, or more information, call 761-1590.

Local lawyer Peter L. Hatem will be on hand at the Scarborough Public Library on Wednesday, May 4, at 6:30 p.m. Hatem has a civil law practice with an emphasis in real estate, civil litigation and bankruptcy.

Hatem also represents clients in small estate planning matters including wills and durable powers of attorney. He will be available to meet privately for brief one-on-one consultations with attendees following his presentation. The event is free and open to the public and is part of Maine Lawyers in Libraries Week.

Community Day

Get your tickets now for Scarborough Community Day at Hadlock Field, home of the Portland Sea Dogs minor league baseball team. The deadline to purchase tickets, which are $7 per person, is Friday, May 6.

Tickets allow the holder entry into the May 15 game versus the Binghamton Mets at 1 p.m. May 15 is also Superhero Day at the ballpark.

Proceeds will benefit the Scarborough Backpack Program, as well as the school store at Scarborough High School. Come support the community and show your Scarborough pride.
