Oxford Hills defeated Brunswick, 17-5 in a game halted by the mercy rule in the fifth inning on Wednesday in Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference high school softball action.
Each spot in the Vikings lineup scored as Makayla Starbird collected three hits including a double as well as scoring three runs to lead the Oxford Hills offense.
Brunswick got on the scoreboard first in the opening inning as Allie Eck singled to center and stole second and third base before scoring on an Emily Girardin fielder’s choice.
The Vikings broke the game open in the second inning, scoring seven runs as the Dragons defense struggled with three errors with two outs that opened the scoring barrage.
The Dragons put together a three-run fourth inning as Eck, Girardin, Shelby Plourde and Alyssa Dunton had consecutive hits. Shea Sullivan plated the final Brunswick run with yet another single.
The Vikings responded with four more runs to end the game as Madison LeBlond tripled followed by consecutive hits and further miscues in the field for the Dragons.
“We’ve got to take responsibility as a team to pick up our play,” said Brunswick coach Hugh Dwyer, whose Dragons visit Bangor on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
“We know that we can play much better and we’re determine to do so,” Girardin commented.
FREEPORT 0 YORK 17
Stephanie Rundlett struck out 12 while allowing one hit as York (2-1) shut out the Falcons (1-2) in five innings in a Western Maine Conference tilt.
Wendy Donnell led the Wildcats’ 17-hit offense with four hits. Rundlett added three, and Julia Babcock, Julia Harrod, Olivia Coughlin and Kiley Blondin had two hits each.
Lauren Briggs singled in the third for Freeport, which visits Falmouth on Friday at 4 p.m.
OAK HILL 15 WISCASSET 0
Oak Hill used seven hits and Makayla Nadeau was the winning pitcher as the Raiders defeated Wiscasset in a Mountain Valley Conference contest.
Grace Sabine went 2-for-3 and Brooke Surette also had two hits and three RBIs in the win.
LISBON 1 MTN. VALLEY 11
The host Falcons rolled to an MVC win over the Greyhounds, who fell to 1-1 and visits St. Dom’s today at 4 p.m.
Emily Laubauskas had two hits, three runs, three stolen bases, and fanned 11 for Mountain Valley.
Sydney Petrie contributed a home run and a single for the Falcons (2-0).
Jasmine Le singled in the only Greyhound (1-1) run in the fifth inning.
