PORTLAND — The Thornton Academy boys tennis team opened the 2016 season with a 3-2 win over host Deering on Wednesday.

The Golden Trojans got a singles win from Jack Xiao and a pair of doubles victories.

In the first doubles, TA’s Dylan Gooch and Jared Waterhouse picked up a 6-0, 7-5 win. The Trojans also got a doubles win from Adam Lovejoy and Asher Thompson, who won their bout 6-4, 6-4.

Girls Tennis

Thornton Academy 4, Dering 1

The TA girls took four out of five matches in their season opener on Wednesday.

The Trojans swept the singles matches with Eva Sachs, Grace Pickering and Andrea Kucharova all picking up wins.

TA also got a doubles win from Claudia de la Hoz Garcia and Pilar Salcedo.

Biddeford 4, Sanford 1

The host Tigers took all three singles matches on their way to a win over Sanford.

Biddeford got singles wins from Cara Boisvert, Nicole Bradeen and Makayla Dion-Bernier.

The Tigers would also pick up a doubles win thanks to the team of Gabby Smith and Julia Pearl.

Sanford’s lone win came from the doubles team of Hannah Miller and Alaina Parison.

Boys Lacrosse

Falmouth 10, Kennebunk 5

Pat Gassman led the Rams with two goals and an assist in their loss against Falmouth Wednesday. Donovan Connor also added a goal and two assists, while Dante DeLorenzo and Brenden Whitten scored a goal apiece.

Although the Rams’ offense was kept quiet, goalie Jim Ross had a nice game for Kennebunk, tallying 17 saves.

Wells 14, Lake Region 3

Wells cruised past Lake Region Wednesday thanks to an explosive offensive attack.

Ethan Marsh led the Warriors with six goals, while Evan Whitten and Chad Fitzpatrick added hat tricks. Tyler Whitten and Sam Hazlett also added goals for Wells.

Softball

Biddeford 12, McAuley 0

Kirsten Lebreux led the Tigers at the plate and in the circle Wednesday afternoon against McAuley.

Lebreux finished with three RBI on three hits, including a double and two singles. Lebreux also tallied 10 strikeouts on the day.

Biddeford scored five runs in the first three innings, including a two-run home run from Brittany Roy in the first. The Tigers also scored three runs in the third when Lebreux knocked in Amber Magnant, followed up by an RBI single from Brook Davis.

The Tigers added four more in the fifth inning – highlighted by a triple from Erin Martin, which scored Cassidy Gonneville.

Sanford 11, Noble 5

The Spartans scored eight runs in the sixth inning to rally past visiting Noble.

Nicole Main led the Sanford rally with a three-run home run. The Spartans also got two-run singles from Julia Allen and Morgan Coleman and Jen Jones added an RBI single in the big inning.

Traip 20, OOB 9

The Old Orchard Beach softball team fell to Traip on Wednesday afternoon. The Seagulls had impressive day offensively, totaling 16 hits, including a home run from Maegan Halle and a triple from Vanessa Hebert.

Wells 18, Gray-New Gloucester 14

Anya Chase led the way for the Warriors, going 4-4 with five runs scored.

Hannah Moody drove in four runs with two doubles and Sam Bogue drove in three with an RBI double and single.
