PORTLAND — Continued road construction will impact access to traffic and downtown wharves and parking areas early next week.

The Maine Department of Transportation will be removing paved surface area on Commercial Street from Dana Street to Franklin Arterial on the ocean side May 23. On May 24, crews will be paving, which will periodically impact access to and from the wharves and parking areas for up to an hour and a half at a time.

According to a press release from the MDOT, not all wharves will be impacted at the same time; access is being restricted to allow the pavement enough time to cool. The quality of the new pavement would be at risk without the restriction, according to MDOT.

On May 25, crews will complete paving Dana Street to Franklin Arterial. Catch basins will be cleaned and striping preparation will take place, with little impact to traffic and parking.
