Miles was born in Keene, NH to Maynard and Merle Waltz. He graduated from Keene High School in 1953, Bowdoin College in 1957, and the University of Vermont School of Medicine in 1961. Following his internship at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, he served three years as a doctor in the U. S. Air Force. He completed his residency at Rhode Island Hospital in 1966 and was recruited to North Conway by Dr. William Duprey in 1967. Miles primarily practiced family and internal medicine, but at times his work also included obstetrics, serving as a medical examiner, and shifts in the emergency room. He would see patients at any time of the day or night and was the stereotypical county doctor, still making house calls up until he retired on December 31, 1999.
In retirement, he devoted much of his time to community service, volunteering for over twenty different organizations in a wide variety of capacities. While his preference was to quietly pursue his volunteer efforts, they were noticed by the community and he received the 2006 Joseph D. Vaughan Award and the 2010 Bob Morrell Award in recognition for his efforts on behalf of others.
Miles was frequently seen riding his bike or walking from his Pine Street home to his Mount Washington Valley Medical Center Office, often multiple times a day, typically wearing a suit and tie. He had a curiosity for life and was interested in any subject someone was willing to expound upon. He also enjoyed reading, gardening, dancing, and spending time with family and friends.
Miles was predeceased by his first wife of 35 years, Louise L. Waltz in 2001. He is survived by his second wife, June R. Waltz. Miles is survived by his brother, Mark F. Waltz and his wife Jane of Warren, Maine, his son Mark M. Waltz and his wife Carol of Topsham, Maine, his son Miles E. (Ned) Waltz, Jr. and his wife Karin of Gig Harbor, Washington, his daughter Martha J. DiDomenico and her husband, Richard of West Lebanon, New Hampshire, his step-daughter, Sandra Steele-Haynes and her husband Robert of Eaton Center, New Hampshire and his stepdaughter Roberta Steele- Marotta and her husband Joseph of East Conway, New Hampshire.
