BRUNSWICK
The Maine Principals Association Schoolboys and Schoolgirls Tennis Championships continue this week.
Beginning on Friday at Lewiston High School, the top high school boys and girls players from Maine will meet, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the opening two rounds.
From the Mid-coast area, the boys are well represented, led by two-time finalist and Mt. Ararat junior Nick Mathieu, who is the No. 1 seed. Mathieu opens play in the second round, with his match slated to begin at 2 p.m. He faces the winner of the first round matchup between Camden Hill’s Matt Morse and Foxcroft Academy’s Kazuyuki Kawashima.
Other seeded boys include Mathieu’s Eagles teammate, Peter Mao, the No. 10 seed who meets the winner of the John McCloskey (Scarborough) Brandon Ameglio (Waynflete) match at 6 p.m.
Morse brothers Thomas and Matthew Jarmusz are into the second round, with Thomas seeded fifth and Matthew 11th. Thomas plays at 3:30 p.m. against the survivor of the Kyle Townsend (Hampden)-Alex Marsh (Hermon) match, while Matthew awaits the winner of the first round match between Peter Stegemann (Falmouth) and Brandon Chasse (Hampden).
Brunswick’s Dasol Kim and JD Souza face first round challenges, with Kim meeting St. Dom’s Noah Toussaint at 9:45 a.m., and Souza in action against Presque Isle’s Denny Young at 12:45 p.m.
Top contenders for the boys include No. 2 Nick Forester of Falmouth, third-seeded
Dariy Vykhodtsev of Thornton Academy and No. 4 Michael Mills of Cape Elizabeth.
Girls
Arielle Leeman of Morse and Cassie Ridge of Brunswick are the lone Midcoast representatives in the Schoolgirls tournament.
Leeman opens play in the first round against Hampden Academy’s Aubra Linn at 8:30 a.m., while Ridge hits the court against Bangor’s Clara Bradley at 12:45 p.m.
If Leeman wins, she will face eighth-seeded Liv Clifford of Cape Elizabeth at 2 p.m., while Ridge has Katie Gilman of Cape Elizabeth in the second round if she is able to get past Bradley.
Lana Mavor of Yarmouth is the No. 1 seed for the girls, with Bethany Hammond of St. Dom’s seeded second, Julia Brogan of Falmouth third and Rosemary Campanella of Wells fourth.
Friday’s winners return to Lewiston High School on Saturday for the Round of 16 and quarterfinals.
The semifinals will take place on Monday at Bates College’s Wallach Tennis Center at 9:30 a.m., with the title matches set for 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Bates.
