PORTLAND — A handful of locals competed in the Maine Principals’ Association Singles Tournament Friday in Portland.
Coming off an undefeated regular season, Thornton Academy’s Viktor Schwarz, Dariy Vykhodtsev and Jack Xiao all made the cut.
Schwarz defeated Mt. Desert’s Kaleb Payson in three sets in the first round. Payson took the first 6-4, however Schwarz would battle back to win the ensuing two 6-1 and 6-4.
Xiao then beat Hall-Dale’s Andy Peterson in two sets, winning each 6-2.
Schwarz would then sweep Caribou’s Ethan Plourde 6- 0, 6-0 while Xiao fell to Mt. Blue’s Evan Backus 6-3. 6-2.
No. 3 Vykhodtsev then beat Portland’s Peter Gribizis 6-0, 6-0.
TA’s Grace Pickering and Eva Sachs competed in the girls competition, along with Kennebunk/Wells’ Rosemary Campanella.
Pickering would defeat Piscataquis’ Alanna Whitney 6-4, 6-3 in the first round, while Sachs pushed past Boothbay’s Mackenzie Colby 6-1, 6-0.
Campanella won her match in the second round 6-0, 6- 0 while Pickering fell to Lewiston’s Maddi Roy 6-3, 6-3.
Waynflete’s Lexi Epstein defeated Sachs in the second round 6-1, 6-4.
The round of 16 and quarterfinals will take place Saturday at Lewiston.
