A BRUSH FIRE ON BIRCH ISLAND was extinguished Tuesday with help from a Brunswick Marine Resource Officer, the Freeport Harbormaster and Maine Marine Patrol, along with staff from Paul’s Marina staff who helped get firefighters and equipment to the island. Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brillant said the fire covered a 100-foot-by-50-foot area. Getting firefighters and equipment to the island was a bit tricky. Brillant said the island is known for lightening strikes, though the cause of the fire is unknown. The fire was reported at around 2:30 p.m. and fire firefighters left the scene at around 4 p.m. A statement on the Brunswick Marine Resources and Harbor Management Facebook’s page read: “With help from the Freeport Harbormaster, Marine Resource Officer, Maine Marine Patrol and staff from Paul’s Marina, firefighters and their firefighting tools were able to be transported out to the island.”
