TOPSHAM — Edgar L. (Joe) Black Jr., 83, of Topsham passed away peacefully with family by his side at Mid Coast Hospital after a brief illness on June 18, 2016. Joe was born January 22, 1933 to Edgar L. and Helen M. (Nelson) Black of Bath, Maine.

He graduated from Morse High School, Class of 1951 and attended Bentley College in Massachusetts.

Joe began his 60- year career in the automobile business beginning as a salesman at Wyman Ford in Bath in 1953. He was general manager of Patterson Motors in 1960 and owner of the dealership in 1963 which became Black’s Oldsmobile in Brunswick. He purchased Hall Motors in 1971 which became Black’s Dodge, Chrysler & Plymouth in Newcastle. He continued to sell both new and used cars in Florida and Maine notably until age 80.

Joe was married to his high school sweetheart, Anita L. Deering, on July 5, 1952 until her death in 1998. He was also predeceased by his parents and sisters, Marjorie Black and Elinor Gallant of Bath.

Joe is survived by his son, Joseph W. Black and his wife Joy of Damariscotta; his daughter, Marjorie B. Helmbolt and her husband Duane of Brunswick; and his only and beloved grandchild, Haley L. Helmbolt of Laramie, Wyoming. He is also survived by his loving companion, Susan W. Albright of Topsham as well as several nieces and nephews.

Joe was a Life Member of the Elks Bath Lodge #934, member of Kora Shriners International and member of the Sons of the American Legion.

At Joe’s request there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Joe’s memory to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
