SANFORD — A war attrition broke out between the Upper Valley Nighthawks (8-8) and the Sanford Mainers (7-9), with the visitors taking the game in 13 innings, 4-3.

The Nighthawks got the difference maker in the top of the 13th inning compliments of Charlie Concannon (St. Joseph’s) on a solo home run to right field off of Sanford reliever Jonah Normandeau (UMaine) to make it 4-3.

The Mainers led however for most of the ballgame, and only ever trailed in extra innings. Sanford jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first on a bases loaded walk from Chris Gaetano (Monmouth) and later an RBI single from John Cresto (Santa Clara), to score CJ Krowiak (Binghamton) and Zach Jancarski (Maryland), respectively.

Then in the second, the Moose added another on a Krowiak RBI double, which scored Ako Thomas (Michigan) from second base to make it 3-0. The Mainers would add only three more hits over the next 9 2/3 innings.

Billy Layne (Seton Hall) slammed the door on Mainers, throwing 5 2/3 innings of one-hit baseball once he took over in the fourth. Layne recorded seven strikeouts and gave up only a single walk as he set the stage for the gradual Nighthawks comeback.

Upper Valley picked up a run in the third on an Alex Hanson (St. Petersburg) single and A.J. Walden (Alabama Huntsville) scored in the fourth on a wild pitch to make the game 3-2 at the time.

The equalizer came in the eighth, after Zach Canada (North Carolina Wilmington) singled to get on with one man away. Samuel Steeves (Franklin Pierce) threw over to first to check on him, but the throw got away and Canada was able to advance all the way to third base. Walden then proceeded to double, knocking in Canada to make it 3-3.

The Mainers will be back in action tonight, when Sanford takes on the visiting Valley Blue Sox for their second visit of the season.
