OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Old Orchard Beach Surge (13-11) were defeated by the visiting Sullivan Explorers (13-11) on Monday night at The Ballpark with a final score of 6-5 in 10 innings.

The Explorers took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Nate Coronado picked up an RBI walk, followed by an RBI single from Bryan Hoover. Designated hitter Kevin Putkonen also picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice.

The Surge battled back, tying the game in the bottom of the second inning. The Surge had four straight hits, with catcher Jordyn Van Atta picking up an RBI on a bases-loaded single. Shortstop Joshua Martinez also picked up an RBI, with an error on the second baseman allowing another runner to score.

The game remained tied until the seventh, when the Surge took a 5-3 lead. Second baseman Chris Ray reached on a leadoff walk, eventually scoring on a dropped third strike – this also allowed center fielder Shaun Cooper to reach second. Designated hitter Jacob Fabry would knock Cooper home.

Sullivan came out swinging, tying the game in the top of the eighth on a two-run single from newly acquired catcher Parker Franklin.

That would end the night for Surge starter David Ernst, with left-handed pitcher Cody Frank taking over with two on and two out. Ernst would end the night after 7 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits, while walking five and striking out four.

Joshua Martinez would shift from shortstop to the mound, taking over in the ninth for Frank with two on and one out. Frank would toss for 2/3 innings, allowing no hits while walking two.

The Explorers would take the lead in the 10th, with a solo homerun to left from outfielder Adrian Gonzalez.

Martinez ended the night with 1 2/3 innings pitched, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out one.

The Surge were outhit by the Explorers 8-7, with Sean Washington and Luc Pomales leading the team with two apiece.

The Surge play tonight at 6:30 p.m. against the Sullivan Explorers at The Ballpark.
