PORTLAND (AP) — A poll indicates more Mainers believe immigrants strengthen the state than believe they’re a burden, but there’s a stark difference between Republicans and Democrats.
The Portland Press Herald/ Maine Sunday Telegram poll indicates 48 percent of respondents believe immigrants strengthen the state compared to 32 percent who considered them a burden.
Broken down by party, 53 percent of Republican respondents and 14 percent of Democrats believed immigrants to be a burden. The poll also found that 54 percent of Republicans and 11 percent of Democrats support Republican Donald Trump’s proposal to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the U.S.
The poll results were based on landline and cellphone interviews between June 15 and June 21 with 609 randomly selected adult residents. It has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
