Once Pownal residents got past the idea of taking out a $1.5 million bond for road improvements at the annual town meeting on June 20, it took little time to take care of the rest of the business, according to Administrator Scott Seaver said.

“There was a little discussion on the bond issue, but it was very short and sweet. We started at 7 p.m., and we were done by 8:45,” Seaver said.

In addition to approving the bond, voters approved every article on the warrant, spending and zoning articles included.

They voted for $1,096,176 in net spending, a reduction of $28,978 from this year. But the town-wide property revaluation will have a much higher impact on the town’s tax rate than the municipal budget, say town officials.

Residents voted for a back-lots ordinance, a product of more than a year’s work on the part of the Planning Board. The new ordinance allows homeowners to create and sell another house lot on their property even if the new lot doesn’t have road frontage. The old zoning ordinance stipulated that a house lot must have 300 feet of road frontage.

“It gives people the ability to give their children a lot or to sell one off,” Seaver said.

The Board of Selectmen will elect new officers at its next meeting, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 5. Tim Giddinge, re-elected on June 14, is in his eighth year as board chairman.
