Good Food Bus coming to city

The Good Food Bus is a re-purposed school bus turned mobile-food market bringing fresh vegetables, fruit and other essential food items directly to where people live, work and play. The Good Food Bus – a project of St. Mary’s Nutrition Center, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Cultivating Community – will visit Westbrook every Tuesday from mid-July through October.

The bus will be parked at St. Anthony’s Church (formerly St. Hyacinth’s) parking lot from 3-5 p.m., selling locally grown produce and other items. Cash, credit/debit, EBT food stamps and WIC benefits are accepted. In partnership with Wholesome Wave, Maine Farmland Trust and the USDA Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentives program, the Good Food Bus matches EBT/SNAP purchases with bonus fruit and vegetable vouchers through the Maine Harvest Bucks program, making vegetables more affordable while still providing a living wage to the farmers who produced them. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/GoodFoodBus.

Firefighter safety

Safety is the No. 1 concern for every firefighter, EMS professional and chief officer as they approach their job every day. Westbrook firefighters, along with irefightfers, EMTs and paramedics nationwide, spent much of last week devoted to job safety and training specifically related to firefighter safety. This is a nationwide drive joining all fire departments in an effort to make their profession as safe as possible and to raise the level of awareness toward firefighter safety and call attention to the unacceptable number of deaths and injuries plaguing fire departments.

According to Fire Chief Andrew Turcotte, the Westbrook Fire & Rescue Department suspended the majority of all non-emergency activity during the week to focus on safety and health training and education, allowing all shifts and personnel to participate.
