BIDDEFORD — Emergency crews suspended the search for a possible missing person near Biddeford Pool Tuesday evening after reports that a swimmer had gone missing that afternoon.
The search was suspended at about 8 p.m., Saco Deputy Fire Chief David Pendleton said, stating that at that time, no one had been reported missing.
Pendleton said earlier in the day that a witness reading a book near the shore reported seeing a man dive into the water but not come back out.
The call came in to emergency responders at about 3:30 p.m., said Capt. Jason Wheeler of the Biddeford Fire Department.
Crews from BFD, Saco Fire Department, Maine Marine Patrol and the Coast Guard conducted a search, with SFD deploying one boat and USCG lending two boats and a helicopter.
Previously, Lt. Joe Carroll of SFD said he could neither confirm nor deny that a person was actually missing.
At press time, there was no word as to whether the search would continue.
