FALMOUTH — A new law allowing Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Governor Baxter School for the Deaf to raise private donations takes effect July 29.

The law would allow the school to raise funds from alumni, foundations and others. The school is on Mackworth Island, but MECDHH also serves students in other schools around the state.

State Sen. Cathy Breen, D-Falmouth, spearheaded the bill. In a press release, Breen said the center had been at a disadvantage “because of needless government regulation.”

“Because of this new law, the school will be able now to fundraise in the same manner as every other school in Maine,” Breen said in the release.
