Biddeford’s Cassie Riley passes up the field in the first half Wednesday.
BIDDEFORD — The visiting Deering girl’s soccer team surged in the first half and topped Biddeford 6-1 at Waterhouse Field Wednesday evening.

Mia Sargent would lead the Rams by scoring a hat trick in the first half and propelling Deering to a 5-1 lead at the halftime break. Deering would play a strong second half and secure the big win.

Biddeford coach Darren Boynton was disappointed in his club’s slow start, an issue that has been recurring so far in Biddeford’s young season.

“(Deering) had a fast start and they have some fast players. They just kept coming at us and that’s been an Achilles heal for us – having slow starts,” said Boynton.

The Deering onslaught began at the 28:39 mark in the first, when Sophie Silva converted a penalty kick to give the Rams the 1-0 lead.

Just 1:05 later, Sahar Habibzai would take a pass across the middle from Candy Odhiambo and add another goal, giving the Rams the quick two-point advantage.

Sargent would score her first goal just four minutes later, breaking the score open at 3-0 less than 20 minutes into regulation.

Biddeford captain Chantel Gagnon put the Tigers on the board with a goal up the middle at the 7:31 mark, however, Sargent would add two more goals in the final four minutes to extend the Deering lead to 5-1 and put the game out of reach.

Maggie Healy would score Deering’s final goal in the second half, while Biddeford goalie Jillian Lewis recorded eight saves.

Despite the loss, Boynton was proud of his team’s improvement in the second half.

“That first half we were definitely letting them come at us. Our touch was very bad in the first half so that’s something we improved in the second half,” said Boynton. “I thought the girls adjusted well later in the game and got some pressure upfield, but they came at us pretty quick. Overall I was happy and they were happy.”

It did not take much to motivate the Tigers at halftime, according to Boynton.

“A kick in the tail – that’s all it was. A kick in the tail to remind them how good they can play. You saw in the second half, we had a lot of opportunities and we put the pressure on them, we just couldn’t convert it into goals.”

The Tigers drop to 0-4 to start the season, but Boynton is happy with the progress his team has made, and expects it to continue to improve.

“This is a progression – we have improved in every game we have played and that’s all we can ask for.”
