Sappi lauded for

economic contributions

Sappi North America, a producer and supplier of diversified paper and packaging products, has received a Champion of Economic Development Award from the Maine Development Foundation. According to a press release from the foundation, the award is given to those individuals or organizations that are key to driving Maine’s economy forward.

The press release noted that Sappi “has overcome industry challenges through its forward-thinking approach to the pulp and paper business, focusing primarily on unprecedented innovation. This is evident by its recent announcement of the groundbreaking Neoterix ST functional release paper, which utilizes Sharklet Technologies’ microtexture pattern to create bacteria-inhibiting textures.”

The company employs some 1,300 people across three locations: South Portland, Westbrook and Skowhegan. Sappi also supports more than 75 local organizations and school programs with volunteer efforts and financial contributions, the press release said.

Sappi is among three other organizations to receive the Champion of Economic Development award this year. The 2016 award recipients will be recognized during the Maine Development Foundation annual meeting on Sept.

Flag Ladies

to visit Westbrook

GFWC Westbrook Woman’s Club will meet at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Westbrook Warren Congregational  Church 810 Main St. The Freeport Flag Ladies will present the program. Since 9/11, Carmen Footer, Elaine Greene and JoAnn Miller wave American flags on Main Street in Freeport every Tuesday morning. 

Guest are welcome to attend the meeting.

Seniors to meet

Westbrook Senior Citizens will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, in Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St. Beverly Lessard, an author, will be the guest.

The group has seats available on Nov. 13 for a trip to Indian Head in New Hampshire. For more information, call 883-5046 or 854-2705.

Historical society

meeting reminder

Margaret Chernosky, a teacher consultant with the Maine Geographic Alliance, an arm of the National Geographic Society, will present a program about quilting when Westbrook Historical Society meets at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

The program is titled “Hidden Histories in Quilts: What Your Antique Quilt Can Tell you About Past Times.” Those with old quilts are encouraged to take them to the meeting.

Dance center sets

The Drouin Dance Center in Westbrook is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner and dance performance on Saturday, Oct. 1, at Westbrook-Warren Church, 810 Main St.

The event includes two seatings: 5-5:45 p.m. with a performance 6-6:30 p.m., followed by another seating, 7-7:45 p.m. and performance 8-8:30 p.m. A gift basket will be raffled at each seating. The proceeds will benefit dance company families to defray cost of competition fees, costumes and choreography camps.

The meal includes spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and a drink. Presale tickets are $10, $8; night of event, $12, $10.
