The town has scheduled a free disposal week at the transfer station and recycling center, Monday, Oct. 17-Sunday, Oct. 23, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. There will be no fees for residents to dispose of TVs, monitors, keyboards, laptops, printers, scanners, old appliances, building materials from home projects and miscellaneous items. Hazardous waste material is not permitted. A 2016 car window sticker is required. They can be purchased at the Town Hall. For more information, see www.yarmouth.me.us.

for art festival

Jurors have selected 169 pieces for the annual Yarmouth Art Festival, to be held Oct. 19-22 at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 396 Gilman Road, Yarmouth.

An online show catalog displays all the pieces in the 2016 show, along with information about each artist. It can be seen at http://yarmouthartfestival.com/catalog/

A record number of 495 pieces were entered this year by artists across the state. Jurors for 2016 were artist Suzanne Harden; Peg Golden, owner of Greenhut Galleries in Portland; and Chris Thompson, associate professor at Maine College of Art and principal in the Thompson’s Point development in Portland.

The show will be open Wednesday, Oct. 19, through Friday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. An artists’ reception, including music and refreshments, will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, from 5:30-8 p.m. Admission will be free for both the festival and the reception, with donations accepted.

The event, created in 2009 as a new venue for Maine artists, features painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. Entry fees and sale commissions support St. Bart’s programs.

Flu shot clinic

A free flu vaccine clinic, organized by the Yarmouth Health Council, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 4-6 p.m., at the AMVETS Post 2, 148 North Road, Yarmouth. No appointment is necessary. Those who attend should bring their insurance ID card.

Film, book talk

set at library

Merrill Memorial Library’s Merrill Film Society will screen the movie “Election,” starring Reese Witherspoon, Matthew Broderick and Chris Cline, Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m., at the library, 215 Main St. The film is based on the novel by Tom Perrotta.

“Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand,” by Helen Simonson, will be discussed at the next meeting of Merrill Memorial Library’s Readers Circle, Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m.
