A grand opening celebration is set for 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, at Ridgewood at Village Square , 8 Millett Drive (formerly 99 School St.), Gorham.

Avesta Housing, a nonprofit organization, will host a grand opening celebration of its new affordable community for seniors,  Ridgewood at Village Square, at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, at the building, 8 Millett Drive (formerly 99 School St.).

The new project has 24 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The facility was designed by Gawon Turgeon Architects of Scarborough and built by Great Falls Construction in Gorham. The building is on the site of the former Millett Elementary School.

Brackbill to visit North Gorham

Westbrook author Eleanor Phillips Brackbill will speak at 7 p.m.on Thursday, Oct. 27, at the North Gorham Public Library, 2 Standish Neck Road. Brackbill wrote “The Queen of Heartbreak Trail: The Life and Times of Harriet Smith Pullen, Pioneering Woman.”  In 1897, Harriet Smith Pullen, broke and alone, landed in Skagway, Alaska, from Washington State, in the midst of the Klondike Gold Rush. “Her enterprising attitude and gregarious nature would make her an Alaska legend,” a library statement said.

The library will host  board games starting this month. Jennifer Plummer, library coordinator, said that Crossroad Games will present afterschool board games at North Gorham Public Library the second and fourth Thursday of the month starting Oct. 27, from 3-4:30 p.m.  “Crossroad Games will provide a selection of games for all grades,” Plummer said.  “Have a favorite you want to play? Bring it with you.”

Scouts, Lions lower flags

With the help of Boy Scout Troop 73, the Gorham Lions recently lowered the 100 flags gracing Gorham’s main thoroughfares.  The Boy Scouts washed the flags in preparation for storage.

“Also assisting the Gorham Lions was Carl Phillips from Phillips Auto Body in Gorham, who provided a wrecker-mounted secure moving ladder to simplify the flag-lowering project,” said Ken Aldrich, club spokesman.

The next regular Gorham Lions meeting will be on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Lion’s Den (former Elmwood School) on South Street (Route 114) at 6:30 p.m.  Visitors are welcome.

GOP meet’n greet

The Gorham Republican Committee is hosting a social from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Moody’s Collision Center, 200 Narragansett St., to meet its candidates. Candidates are Amy Volk, running for Senate District 30; Jim Means, House District 27; and Matt Mattingly, House District 26. The event features desserts, a cocoa bar and 50/50 raffle.

The Gorham Ecumenical Council of Churches will sponsor a prayer and reconciliation service at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, at Cressey Road United Methodist Church, 81 Cressey Road. “The purpose of this service is to offer a venue where people can come together, to consider and pray about their own choices and to promote civility and respect for all choices,” a statement released by Jude Garland of the ecumenical council said..

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service reported on Oct. 13 that the U.S. public debt was $19,720,830,822,303.49.
