theater program
Starting this week, the South Portland Public Library will offer a six-week theater program for kids ages 8-14. Called “Acting Up,” the program will offer improvisation, theater games and character studies. It is led by local dance and theater teacher Betsy Dunphy. Participants will learn to use their bodies and voices to find the actor within. No experience is necessary, but participants are asked to attend each session. The class meets every Thursday, from Nov. 3 through Dec. 15, excluding Thanksgiving. Class times are 3-4 p.m. for kids 11 to 14, and 4-5 p.m. for kids 8 to 10.

Wildlife research scientist Rick Gray will present a program on Maine’s raptors at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth.
Learn about eagles, ospreys, and kestrels from Gray, who is a raptor specialist at the Biodiversity Research Institute in Portland. He has also conducted independent hawk watches, spent three summers monitoring the osprey population in Casco Bay and is starting a nest box program for American kestrels. Gala to benefit
Crossroads services
The Crossroads annual gala will be held on Thursday, Nov. 3, from 6-9 p.m., at the Portland Harborview Hotel. The event includes a silent and live auction, as well as a full dinner. All proceeds will go to the Barbara L. Dacri Scholarship Fund, helping people get treatment and recovery services. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at www.501auctions.com/crossroadsgala.
Young Cape pianist
featured in concert
Seven young pianists will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, at the First Parish Church in Portland to play virtuoso works by Frédéric Chopin, Ferrucio Busoni, Claude Debussy, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Béla Bartók.
Among the young musicians taking part in the Portland Piano Extravaganza is Nell Britton of Cape Elizabeth. Admission is $15 or $10 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at Eventbrite or at the door.
E-waste recycling
benefits band boosters
The Scarborough Band Boosters will hold an electronic waste recycling fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., in the high school parking lot. Participants can give the group a donation to dispose of e-waste such as televisions, game systems, laptops, cell phones, digital cameras and more. Appliances such as refrigerators will not be accepted.

The Greater Portland Chapter of the Maine Genealogical Society chapter will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 5, at the First Congregational Church on Cottage Road in South Portland. This month’s program features Linda McCloon, genealogist and director of the Portland Harbor Museum, who will present a talk, “Like Father, Like Sons – Scarborough’s Burbank Family in the Revolutionary War.” All meetings are free and open to the public. Veterans History Project

The Scarborough Public Library is hosting an information session for the Veterans History Project, a program of the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress, on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m.
Pauleena MacDougall, director of the Maine Folklife Center, will provide an overview of the Veterans History Project, including details on how veterans can share their stories through audio and video narratives, written memoirs, war-time correspondence and personal diaries.

plans annual meeting
The Cape Elizabeth Land Trust will hold its annual meeting on Sunday, Nov. 6, from 3-5 p.m., at Thomas Memorial Library. The keynote speaker this year is Dr. Robert Sanford, author, anthropologist, and professional archeologist, who will present a program, “Reading Rural Landscapes.” This event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.
