Gorham – A deadly crash involving a car and dump truck on snow-covered Narragansett Street Monday morning claimed the life of a Gorham man and hospitalized four others including three elementary school girls.
According to a police report, Joseph Piawlock, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene after a vehicle driven by Yvonne Piawlock, 39, collided with a dump truck.
The accident closed a section of Narragansett Street (Route 202) from the bypass roundabout to Cousins Road for about three hours
Gorham Police Chief Daniel Jones confirmed Monday that the accident involved an SUV in which Joseph Piawlock was a passenger.
The police report listed Daniel Aceto, 54, of Gray as driver of the dump truck.
Gorham Fire Chief Robert Lefebvre said Monday rescue personnel utilized the jaws of life to cut five people from the wreakage. Lefebvre said the dump truck driver was not injured.
According to the police report,Yvonne Piawlock lost control of the gray SUV, crossed into the opposing travel lane and was struck by the truck that was traveling northbound.
Carl Phillips of Phillips and Sons Body Shop was called to the scene to tow the dump truck that he said had significant front-end damage. Phillips, contacted by cell phone Monday, described the truck as a single axel, GMC Brigadier.
Police said Yvonne Piawlock and three female juveniles were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Gorham School Superintendent said Tuesday “that all three children involved in yesterday’s crash attended Narragansett Elementary School.”
Perry did not release the grades of the three girls. But, the school has grades kindergarten through 5.
“We will have counselors from across the district available today at the school to work with classrooms, or small groups, or even individual students or staff on an as needed basis,” Perry said Tuesday. “These additional supports will be in place all day today, and will remain in place for as long as we feel we need to provide these supports to our Narragansett family.”

Jones, interviewed at the scene, made national TV news, according to Facebook postings from Florida where he once worked. “I just saw you on World News Tonight,” one posting said. “Sorry for all the bad weather and deadly accidents.”
Narragansett Street is a heavily traveled commuter route.The accident occurred near the highway’s intersection with Harding Road. Rescue units from Buxton, Standish and Scarborough assisted Gorham Public Safety with transporting the injured to Maine Medical Center.
Gorham Police Department, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department and Maine State Police are investigating the accident.
