A New Gloucester man who was reported missing Thursday afternoon was found safe at a Gardiner store, Maine State Police report.

Frank Birch, 78, called his wife to say he was Christmas shopping, though he was confused about what town he was in. A state police trooper got on the phone with him while Gardiner police went to the store to confirm that he was safe, Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in a news release.

His wife reported him missing after he did not show up Thursday morning for a medical appointment in Yarmouth and his truck was pulled out of a snowbank by a wrecker, after which he drove off.
