Firefighters from several communities battled a house fire Sunday afternoon that caused property damage and the loss of some animals in the Oxford County town of Mexico.
Deputy Fire Chief Richard Jones said the fire, which broke out inside a house on Swift River Road about 2 p.m., was extinguished by about 4:45 p.m. Fire departments from surrounding communities including Rumford, Peru, Dixfield and Roxbury assisted in putting out the fire, Jones said.
Neither the homeowner nor anyone else was injured in the blaze, he said.
“She lost two or three chickens, and also her cat perished in the fire,” Jones said.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of Sunday evening, he said, adding that an investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s Office has been assigned to the case.
