Ronald O. Romano, born May 23, 1935, in Portland, son of Joseph and Mary A.J. Romano, died on Sunday, March 5 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, after a long illness.

He grew up in the neighborhood of St. Peter’s Church, and attended Portland schools, including Portland High School. He had various jobs, including long-term employment at Cushman Baking Company. He then took a position of store manager at Handyman Equipment Rental Company, first in South Portland, and then went on to manage the new location at Riverside Street. He held this position for several years. His last position was as yard manager/production manager at Richardson Dana Company. He retired due to ill health in 1997. He married the former Barbara Etter of South Portland on July 24, 1954, and lived in the Portland area until 1991, then moving to the Harpswell area. He was very active in the Faith United Methodist Church on Orr’s Island, holding many positions including Chairman of Trustees. He left Harpswell in 2010 for a condo in Topsham and transferred his church membership to the Lisbon Falls United Methodist Church. He had many interests and hobbies, including extensive home remodeling, woodworking, mechanics, cooking (he was known especially for his meatballs), traveling, and especially sailing and sailboat racing. He was a member of Centerboard Yacht Club for several years. He was very versatile and could master any project to which he turned his interest.

He was a very devoted family man, and he leaves his wife, Barbara, of 62 years, and one son, Ron, Jr., of Portland and his spouse, Chuck Wener, two daughters, Rae Rachel Romano of Falmouth, and Mary Liberty and her husband, James, of Windham. He also is survived by a grandson, Seth Romano, of California, his granddaughter, Molly Brown of Massachusetts, and his great -granddaughter, Sydney Romano, of California. He is also survived by a sister, Jean Harriman, of Portland, and a brother, Alfred Romano, also of Portland, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, John Romano, of Brunswick, and his sister, Connie Coombs, of Portland.

Friends and family are invited to visiting hours Friday March 10, 2017 from 4:00pm to 6:00 pm at A. T. Hutchins, 660 Brighton Avenue in Portland, A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11, at 2:00p.m., also at A. T. Hutchins. Pastor Elizabeth Bachelder-Smith will officiate with the Reverend John Romano.
