BRUNSWICK — Seven local masters swimmers joined over 700 others to compete in the New England Winter Championships, held at Harvard University’s Blodgett Pool March 17-19.
Three swimmers, Katrine Alcaide, Bob Nelson and Fred Schlicher, were gold medalists in their age groups. Two others, Dave Bright and Ben Morse, won silver medals. Mike Hurd and Dale Syphers also contributed valuable points to the Maine Masters’ third-place finish among 74 teams from across New England.
Schlicher, competing in the 65-69 age group, was victorious in three 200-yard events — butterfly, backstroke and freestyle. He also placed second in the 50 back and the 50- and 100-fly. Alcaide (35-39) took gold in the 50 breaststroke and 50 free, establishing a New England record in the latter. She also registered second-place finishes in the 50 fly and 100 individual medley.
Nelson (70-74) won the 200 medley and placed third in the 100 breast.
Bright (60-64) grabbed the silver medal in the 200 medley among his three swims. And Morse (45-49) capped off eight swims with a silver medal performance in the 500 freestyle.
