PORTER — Game Wardens on Thursday recovered the body of a missing Porter man who failed to return from a fishing trip Wednesday evening.

Maine Warden Service spokesman Corporal John MacDonald said the body of Duane Day Sr., 53, was recovered from Plain Pond Thursday afternoon. 

MacDonald said Day had left home at 6 p.m. Wednesday for an evening of hornpout (catfish) fishing. He was expected home around 9 p.m. but failed to return.  When it was discovered he had not returned home as of this morning, family members went to Plain Pond where he had planned to fish. It was there that family located his truck and capsized flat bottom boat. The Day family reported him missing just after 9 a.m. Thursday.

 The boat had no motor and remained on the surface about 75 feet from shore. A game warden K9 team and the Maine Warden Service Dive Team searched the shoreline and water, which  was heavily obscured by vegetation making ,detection difficult. Day was eventually located  beneath his boat.

The Maine Medical Examiner’s office was to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Two lifejackets were found with the boat; Day was not wearing a lifejacket.

This incident remains under investigation by the Maine Warden Service.
