PORTLAND — A 45-year-old Limington man was sentenced Thursday to 12 years in federal prison for distributing methadone five years ago to someone who took it and died.

Documents on file at U.S. District Court in Portland show on  June 1, 2012, Alfred “Bim” McIntosh Jr. burglarized the home of a family member and stole several vials of liquid methadone. In a statement, Acting U.S. Attorney Richard W. Murphy said  McIntosh distributed some of the stolen methadone to Drew Conners, who consumed some of  it  and died the following day of acute methadone toxicity.

McIntosh was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court by Judge D. Brock Hornby to 12 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

In a sentencing memorandum, McIntosh’s attorney, John W. VanLonkhuyzen, said his client admitted responsibility for what he did when he pleaded guilty to the charge of distribution of methadone causing death on Jan, 4.

VanLonkhuyzen said his client had mental health and substance abuse issues but during his incarceration awaiting the disposition of his case had made progress in obtaining his high school equivalency degree.

Murphy said the case resulted  from an investigation conducted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration; the Buxton, Windham and Portland police departments, and Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
