WOOLWICH — Friends of Merrymeeting Bay is looking for volunteers to help with an archaeology dig in Woolwich.
In 1654 at the home and trading post of Thomas Ashley on what is now Thwings Point, a group of early settlers met and signed papers forming the first Europeanstyle government in the Merrymeeting Bay region.
From July 17-28 on weekdays, volunteers are invited to join FOMB in continuing excavations of the site. Volunteers can work closely and learn from trained archaeologists.
Volunteers are required to preregister for half-day time commitments. Multi-day assistance is encouraged, space permitting.
There will be a maximum of six volunteer slots available per half-day session. Register with Tom Walling, dig coordinator, at (207) 666- 5837.
A $20 minimum donation to FOMB is suggested to defray the costs of the $7,000 project. Donations of at least $50 for non-FOMB members will include a one-year membership in the organization.
Any artifacts recovered remain property of the landowner.
