MONMOUTH — Alfred Franklin Proctor, 78, passed away peacefully at his home in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 20.

Alfred (aka Proctor, Proc, Bubba) was born at home in North Bath on November 20, 1938, the youngest child of Joseph Proctor II and Edith Merchant Proctor. As a youngster, he moved to Buckfield where he resided with his mother and stepfather, Archie McAlister, attending school when he wasn’t able to get out of it. At the age of 16, he went to work in the woods with his friend and mentor, Roland Bennett of Buckfield.

Proctor and his first wife, Barbara Hill Proctor, raised five children in the Oxford Hills area, where he enjoyed many years doing carpentry work and building houses. In the early 70’s, he went to work for the Farmer’s Home Administration (referring to himself as a “G-man”) where he was employed as a housing inspector. In the mid 80’s, he retired from FHA and went back to work building and remodeling houses.

During this time, Proctor met and married Anita Campbell. Together, they built a house on Lower Flying Point in Freeport where they lived until 2002. At that time, they fulfilled Proctor’s dream by purchasing an old farm house with a barn in New Gloucester. He quickly became the proud owner of an orange Kubota tractor which helped satisfy the manly-man image that he coveted.

His next adventures took place in Monmouth when his declining health prevented him from living the life he had envisioned while on the farm. He was content puttering around in the garage, plowing snow with his beloved Kubota, visiting with family and friends, and holding court on the couch.
