BRUNSWICK — The Biddeford football team came into Brunswick knowing it would be a much different game than last week’s shutout victory over Westbrook. They knew they would have to put up points against the Dragons. The Tigers, more specifically Carter Edgerton, took to the air, as the junior quarterback threw for 201 yards and four touchdowns to lead the visitors to a 35-28 victory over the defending Class B State Champion Friday evening.

Edgerton was sharp, completing 10-of-15, connecting with Cody Saucier six times for 98 yards and three scores. The junior also rushed for 86 yards.

“Saucier came up big for us tonight,” said Biddeford coach Brian Curit. “This is only his first year playing football.”

Brunswick received the ball to open the game and took only three plays to reach the end zone behind a 64-yard touchdown run by Owen Richardson. The two point conversion failed.

“I didn’t realize how fast number 22 (Richardson) was. He suprised us a little,” said Curit.

Richardson amassed a total of 216 yards rushing for Brunswick, including 124 in the first half.

Not to be outdone, the Tigers took their first drive and went 65 yards on five plays, getting a 19-yard run up the middle by Cam Lantagne, after the kick, Biddeford lead 7-6 just over three minutes into the contest.

Once again, the Brunswick offense wasted no time moving the ball down the field. Quarterback Nate Girardin found Aiden Glover in the middle connecting for 38-yard gain to the Biddeford 37-yard line. From there, Richardson ran the ball three times, hitting the end zone after breaking a pair of tackles for a 30-yard score. The two point conversion was again unsuccessful as the Dragons took a 12-7 lead.

Biddeford re-took the lead on the first play of the second quarter when Edgerton once again found Saucier on a slant and the receiver waltzed into the end zone for his second score of the game. Another point after kick from Garrett Ross gave the the Tigers a 14-12 advantage.

Biddeford went deep into the playbook with a “hook and ladder” play with :35 left in the half. Edgerton completed a pass to Saucier who immediately pitched it back to Curtis Petit who raced down the sideline for the score.

A defensive stop on their own 1-yard as time expired in the half secured a 21-12 halftime lead for Biddeford.

After each team traded touchdowns early in the third quarter, Edgerton hit Petit for a 33-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to give the Tigers a 35-20 lead.

Brunswick scored halfway through the fourth quarter cutting the lead to seven points. The Biddeford defense allowed no more, keeping Richardson and the Dragons in check down the stretch. The Tigers punted with just over a minute left seemingly giving Brunswick the ball back but a roughing the kicker penalty and an automatic first down sealed the victory for Biddeford.

Biddeford is now 2-0 while Brunswick falls to 0-2.
