BATH — Tri-County Literacy is launching Read Together, a new pilot program providing free tutoring to children in the Bath/Brunswick/Topsham area. Read Together is designed for families who want their children, ages 7-11, to have more one-on-one, after school support learning to read but cannot afford a private tutor. Each tutor/student pair will be asked to commit to meet together twice a week for a year. The sessions will be held at a public location during non-school hours. The tutor will plan the sessions around the needs, abilities, and personal interests of the student. All the students will receive free books.
The program is currently seeking both student participants and volunteer tutors. Parents who might be interested in enrolling a child in the program should call the Tri-County Literacy office at (207) 443-6384. People interested in becoming volunteer tutors do not need to have a background in education but will need to attend the 14- hour Tutor Training to be held in Bath, Sept. 28-30.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
