BIDDEFORD — Norman R. Poirier, 86, of Biddeford died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017 at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

He was born May 25, 1931 in Biddeford, a son of George and Rosa (Sylvestre) Poirier and was educated locally.

Norman served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

On April 19, 1955 he married Marguerite A. Paquet in St. Andre’s Church in Biddeford.

He had been employed as a Biddeford police officer, and had worked as a salesman for Delorge Bakery. Norman was a shipping supervisor at West Point Pepperell, and then head custodian at Biddeford High School until his retirement. During his retirement he worked part-time at Biddeford Savings as a parking lot attendant.

Norman was a member of St. Louis Alumni Association. He had served on the Police Commission under mayors Deschambeault, Pomerleau, Gaulin, Lemire, Dutremble and Frechette; he was a city councilor during the administration of Mayor Dutremble and was a member of the School Board with mayor Dion.

Norman was preceded in death by three brothers George, Joseph and Paul Poirier and six sisters Florence and Gertrude Poirier, Sr. Martha Poirier, scim, Sr. Laurette Poirier, ocd, Diana Bertrand and Evelyn Fleurant.

He is survived by Marguerite Poirier, his wife of 62 years, of Biddeford; three sons David R. Poirier and is wife Laurie of Lyman, Michael M. Poirier of Saco and Patrick J. Poirier and his wife Debbie of Biddeford; a daughter Rachel Hallczuk and her husband Ryan of Biddeford; a brother Maurice Poirier of North Carolina; two sisters Beatrice Reardon of Saco and Lucille Duclos of Saco; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting Hours will be 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017 at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Joseph Church in Biddeford. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Biddeford.
