Lindsay grew up in Short Hills, New Jersey and attended Princeton University, class of 1953. His college friendships were lifelong, renewed through his regular attendance at reunions, dressed in the many orange and black versions of the alumni sports jacket of his class. He was drafted by the US Army where he served at Fort Benning, Georgia
He married Mary Alden Nordquist in 1963. He and Aldie moved to Acton, Massachusetts where they lived for many years and raised their daughters, Wendy and Molly. Lindsay worked in Boston for Tucker Anthony & R.L. Day, retiring on December 31, 1992. On the first day of retirement, Lindsay and Aldie headed off to Florida.
As a child, he loved to visit Maine. As as an adult, he and Aldie bought a cottage in South Harpswell with dear friends Alex and Jennie Williams at the Auburn Colony. This started a family tradition of spending summers in Maine. Lindsay loved to welcome visitors and always made people feel at home. Lindsay served as president of the Auburn Colony Association for several years. He was a member of Elijah Kellogg Church in Harpswell Center. In 2006, Lindsay and Aldie built a home at Highland Green in Topsham.
He enjoyed music and played the piano by ear. When he heard a tune he liked, he sat down and shared it with everyone, a talent he used to add joy to many occasions. A wonderful tennis player, he could anticipate where the ball was heading and was always able to return it. A keen and thoughtful observer of life and events, his tennis skills were a demonstration of how well he could know and plan for what would come next. He loved to spend time with his family. His kindness and sense of humor will be greatly missed, as will his steady guidance while teaching five grandsons to drive.
He is survived by his loving wife Aldie of 54 years, daughter Wendy Van Damme and husband Yves, daughter Molly Davidson and husband Philip, grandchildren William, Henry, Frederick, Louis, and Charles Van Damme and Georgiana and Luke Davidson, and niece Liz Brennan and husband Jim Conrad and their son Ryan Conrad. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Alicia, and his brother Jack.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at 2 pm at Elijah Kellogg Church in Harpswell. Reception following. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in the spring.
Arrangements are in the care of Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick.
