The World Affairs Council of Maine announced that Kate McCarthy has been selected for the position of executive director. Most recently, she served as the director of operations at Limitless Child International, where she brought Maine students to India to introduce soccer to girls living in under-resourced communities.
Donald McFadden, director of environmental services at St. Germain Collins, and resident of Scarborough, and Mark Stasium, of Portland, senior vice president in the Camden National Bank Commercial Real Estate Lending Division, have been elected to the board of directors of the Maine Real Estate & Development Association.
Jessica M. Govind, a resident of Cape Elizabeth, has been named partner at the law firm of Miller Law & Mediation in Portland.
Chris DiMatteo has joined South Portland-based Gorrill Palmer as a new planner and landscape architect. DiMatteo worked for the city of Portland and the town of Kittery after getting his start in New York City.
Systems Engineering IT strategy and managed services provider announced that Lynne Gawtry of Yarmouth has joined the company as director of Human Resources and as a member of the company’s senior leadership team.
Emily T. White of Portland has joined Preti Flaherty’s Business Law group based in the firm’s Portland office.
State Sen. Ben Chipman, D-Portland, was elected to the board of directors of Amistad. Amistad Peer Support and Recovery helps Mainers dealing with mental illness, homelessness, substance use disorders and other challenges.
Aquarius Property Management in South Portland has named new hires and announced promotions: Carlye Youngblood of Portland has joined the company as a property manager; Allison Freeman of Bath has been hired as office and property assistant; and Portland resident Erin Cott has been promoted to business operations and account manager.
Johnson, Webbert & Young, with offices in Portland, announced that Carol J. Garvan has joined the partnership and has been named chair, Class Action Practice.
Giving Back
It was announced Feb. 6 that Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger had reached a record-breaking total for 2017 at $740,027.35. In addition, the campaign also surpassed the $8 million in funds raised in its 28-year history.
Granted
Midcoast Maine Community Action, based in Bath, received $1.4 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Head Start and Early Head Start, U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced in a joint release.
Kennebec Estuary Land Trust was awarded a Quimby Family Foundation grant for $15,000, in part to support food collection efforts by the Merrymeeting Gleaners and educational programs at the LOCAL Garden in Bath.
Recognition
Portland Gear Hub was recognized by Bicycle Coalition of Maine with a Businesses for Better Bicycling Award. The Gear Hub is a nonprofit outdoor gear and bike shop powered by Camp Ketcha, a youth outdoor organization based in Scarborough. Since the Gear Hub’s inception in 2014, hundreds of volunteers have helped sort gear, repair kids’ bikes and translate a traffic safety class into French, Swahili and Lingala. The Gear Hub has recycled more than 5 tons of metal, refurbished more than 400 youth and adult bikes, and donated more than 75 bikes to youth organizations in southern Maine.
Berman & Simmons proudly recognizes the national leadership of attorney Daniel Kagan as he celebrates his 20th year as a governor for the American Association for Justice. Kagan, who resides in Freeport, is considered one of Maine’s leading trial lawyers and a past president of the Maine Trial Lawyers Association.
The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association announced that Todd Livingston, athletic administrator at South Portland High School, has been recognized by the association as a Certified Master Athletic Administrator. The process included an evaluation of his educational background, experience, NIAAA Leadership Courses and professional contributions. It culminated with a practical written project. Livingston is one in an elite group of interscholastic athletic administrators nationwide who attain this level of professionalism.
New Ventures
cPort Credit Union announced plans to open a new location in downtown Portland. The new branch at 35 Middle St., on the corner of Middle and India Streets, is under construction next to Duckfat and Ribollita restaurants.
DiMatteoWaterfront business owners and Casco Bay islanders Rick Frantz and Jennifer Fox were recognized for their work on behalf of the Bay on Jan. 23 by being named a Friend of Casco Bay. At right is Cathy Ramsdell, Friends of Casco Bay executive director.
