SANFORD — On Feb. 27, 1768, the colonial Massachusetts government approved the incorporation of a new municipality in Maine. The community that had been known as Phillipstown for 30 years became a town. It was named Sanford.

On Tuesday, residents will mark the 250th anniversary of that occasion with a celebration in Central Park, topped off by fireworks.

Organizers say folks are expected to start gathering in the park across Main Street from City Hall, around 5 p.m. The can enjoy hot chocolate around a fire pit and perhaps take a turn on the community’s newskating rink prior to the rink’s dedication at 6:15 p.m.

The Sanford High School chorus is scheduled to sing a couple of patriotic selections.

A colonial militia will sound a salute.

Mayor Thomas Cote will read the proclamation that incorporated Sanford 250 years ago.

As well, Rep. Anne-Marie Mastraccio will read a Legislative document marking the occasion, and a representative from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ office will read remarks.

Organizers say there may be a couple of surprises as well.

People may also purchase merchandise bearing the 250th logo, items like T-shirts and sweatshirts in youth and adult sizes, tote bags,  commemorative coins, and apparel described as “pom-pom beanie hats.”

The fireworks, at 7 p.m. signal an end to the evening’s activities and the beginning of a year of events marking the 250th year of Sanford’s incorporation as a town. Sanford became a city in 2013, following a vote of its citizens.

Events throughout the year that will help mark the 250th incorporation are many, including a time capsule in April, a fly-in at Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport in June, a barn dance and colonial reenactment in July, and a block party and brew fest in August.

Complementing the special events are the Memorial Day parade, 4th of July events and parade, road races, the Great Pumpkin Festival, annual soccer tourney, Sanford International Film Festival and a host of other activities that happen annually.
