Westbrook man
faces drug charges
after traffic stop

SOUTH PORTLAND —A Westbrook man is facing drug charges after being found with crack cocaine during a traffic stop in South Portland late Sunday night, Sept. 2.

A member of Maine State Police Troop G and the Pro-Active Criminal Enforcement team stopped a car on Maine Mall Road around 11:30 p.m. During the roadside investigation, police searched passenger Makonnen Berhe, 27, of Westbrook, and found 18 grams crack cocaine and $2,500 in suspected drug proceeds, police said.

After the search, Berhe and the driver of the car, 27-year-old Abdirizak Farah of South Portland, took off running, police said. Both were arrested after a foot pursuit and taken to Cumberland County Jail.

Berhe was charged with unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, violation of conditions of release and refusing to submit to arrest or detention.

Farah was charged with operating after suspension and refusing to submit to arrest or detention. His bail was set at $300.

South Portland and Scarborough police assisted with the arrests.

Walk-N-Roll

WESTBROOK — Creative Work Systems will hold its second annual Walk-N-Roll Saturday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at Riverbank Park in Westbrook. Special guests include Mrs. Maine 2018 Kimberly Mastropasqua, race car driver Ed Johnson and the Westbrook Fire Rescue Team.

The event raises money for Dreams from the Hardt, the nonprofit’s dream-granting program for the hundreds of adults with disabilities the agency serves. It is named for the late John-David Hindle Hardt, a former employee of Creative Work Systems.

Last year, the inaugural Walk-N-Roll raised over $13,000 and granted 15 dreams. This year’s event is on track to exceed its goal of $17,000 and grant over 20 dreams. One hundred percent of the proceeds go to the fund and grant dreams for individuals with disabilities.

GORHAM— The Maine School of Science and Mathematics will host an informational session from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at Bailey Hall at the University of Southern Maine Gorham campus.

Prospective students, ages 9-16, and parents will learn about the MSSM enrollment process, residential life, academics and the STEM Summer Camp. They will be able to meet with newly appointed Executive Director David Pearson, along with representatives from the Summer Camp and Admission offices. Current students and parents will be available to share their personal experiences.

The Maine School of Science and Mathematics is a tuition-free, public, residential high school in Limestone that enrolls students from across the state and serves over 600 students each year through its academic and summer offerings.

Pink Cart to the Cure
scheduled for Sept. 16
WESTBROOK — The second annual Pink Cart to the Cure 9-Hole Golf Event will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 16 at Sunset Ridge Golf Links. 

The fee for the two-person team scramble, which supports the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition, is $50 per player and includes golf, cart, full pig roast lunch and a dessert bar. There will also be a silent auction, prizes and raffles.
