School garden workshop

UMaine Cooperative Extension in Cumberland County is hosting a school garden workshop from  4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Gorham Middle School, 106 Weeks Road.

This workshop, free and open to public, is geared towards educators and volunteers who are interested in starting a school garden or already have a garden at their school. Topics will include sustaining a school vegetable garden, resources and technical support and incorporating gardens in curriculum.  A garden tour will be included, weather permitting. 

The workshop will be led by Heather Whitaker, an alternative education teacher,   master gardener and coordinator and lead educator for the Gorham Middle School Gardens, and Pamela Hargest, a horticulturist for the extension service in Cumberland County.

Church festival reminder

Cressey Road United Methodist Church, 81 Cressey Road, is hosting a free, family fall festival from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20.

The festival features games, music, bouncy house, pony rides, treats and a ministry expo. Everyone is invited.

Meet council candidates

The North Gorham Public Library, 2 Standish Neck Road, will host an opportunity for voters to meet  Town Council candidates at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25.

Candidates will be available to answer questions and refreshments will be served, said Jennifer Plummer, library coordinator.

The candidates running for two, three-year terms are Claude “Fred” Daigle, Lee Pratt and Virginia Wilder Cross.

Brush disposal

Gorham residents can drop off brush at the Public Works, 80 Huston Road, from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 27. There will be no commercial drop-off and stumps will not be accepted. As always, leaves and grass clippings will be accepted at Public Works in the designated spot throughout the season.

Fiddle-icous in concert

Maine’s largest fiddle orchestra, Fiddle-icious, will be in concert at 7 p.m.  Saturday, Oct. 27, at McCormack Performing Arts Center at Gorham High School, 41 Morrill Ave.

Tickets are $15 and children age 12 and under are admitted free.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service reported on Oct. 11 that the U.S. public debt was $21,590,013,434,727.39.
