OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Major Merle Irene Howe was Promoted to Glory on Oct. 19, 2018.
She was born in Picton, Ontario, Canada on Feb. 3, 1925, the daughter of Charles and Merta Rea Howe.
Major Howe graduated from Haverhill High School. She received her Bachelor’s degree in 1967 from Boston University and continued her education at Boston University’s School of Social Work earning her master’s degree in 1969. Major Howe served in The Salvation Army for 43 years. She enjoyed history, stamp collecting and needlecraft and travel.
She was predeceased by her brother Ray and a sister Beth. She is survived by a niece Amanda Howe of Dearborn, Michigan and sister-in-law Polly Howe of Dearborn, Michigan, as well as her family at The Salvation Army Corps.
A graveside service will be held for her and her sister Elizabeth (2002) Monday, Oct. 29, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Deering Park, Salvation Army Section.
Arrangements are in the care of Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, Saco.
Memorial donations may be made in Major Howe’s name to the Salvation Army, 2 Sixth St., Old Orchard Beach, ME 04064.
