Girls Alpine Skiing
Estelle Ballard, Claire Munkacsi, Maggie Munkacsi and Sarah Baxter traveled to States in February. None managed to find the podium, but Claire Munkacsi and Ballard finished 14th and 15th in the Slalom, respectively.

Boys Alpine Skiing
Jacob Polchies, John Cunningham, Daniel Popov and Sam Cousins all competed at States, with Polchies turning in the contingent’s best results, 33rd in the Slalom and 36th in the Giant Slalom.

Boys Basketball
Mark Karter’s boys put together a very strong season, finishing the regular season as AA South’s four-seed, with a record of 11-7. The team opened with a pair of easy wins over Noble and Massabesic before dropping their first game – by just three points, 61-58 – to Deering. Another loss followed, this one to Scarborough; the Rams really found their momentum mid-season, when they blistered Scarborough 65-43 in the teams’ rematch. Including that bout, Gorham went 7-3 through the remainder of their schedule, even recording victories over top-ranked TA and mighty South Portland.

Come the tournament, though, the Rams couldn’t repeat their earlier success vs. the No. 5 Storm, who emerged triumphant in Gorham’s own gym, 59-54.

Seven seniors retire from the program: Drew Meader, Captain Tom Nelson, Captain Jordan Bretton, Henry O’Neill, Captain Tyler Haines, Michael Knight and Bryce Womack.

Girls Basketball
Laughn Berthiaume’s girls, predictably, turned in yet another prime run, finishing their regular schedule in third place in AA South, at 12-6. The team’s season rivals proved to be Scarborough, who got the better of them twice prior to the tournament and once during it.

The Rams picked up key wins over Bonny Eagle, Windham and Portland to earn, when the playoffs began, home-court advantage for the quarterfinals. They handily dispatched No. 6 Sanford 56-37 to reach the semis, held at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. There, however, they ran aground on Scarborough, falling 39-32.

Superstar Mackenzie Holmes, who’ll play DI ball at Indiana beginning next year, says goodbye to the program, as do four other seniors: Brittany Desjardin (playing at USM), Courtney Brent (possibly playing at UMF), Brooke Woodbury and Sarah Walker.

“I will miss this senior group,” Berthiaume said. “They were 69-15 in their four years and won two state championships. However, it was their team unity and camaraderie that was the most fun. They are all leaders in our school and community and they made my time with them so much fun. “

Berthiaume took a moment to highlight some of Holmes’s achievements, noting that she: never missed a game, and started in a school-record 84 consecutive; helped assemble a 47-game win streak; and took over the school’s records in career points (with 1,745), career rebounds (1,018), blocked shots (365), single-season points (595 as a senior ), single-season rebounds (333 as a senior), single-season blocks (112 as a junior). Holmes averaged 30.1 ppg, 16.7 rpg, 3.9 bpg and 2.3 spg in the 2018-19 regular season; recorded four career triple-doubles; and scored 1,059 points in her last two seasons alone.

Boys Hockey
John Portwine’s boys put together a 10-8 regular season record to grab the tournament five-seed. The Rams opened their run with a 2-1 win over Gardiner—then won their next four straight games, 8-0 over Kennebunk/Wells, 10-1 over Marshwood/Traip/Sanford/Noble, 1-0 over Massabesic/Bonny Eagle/Old Orchard Beach and 6-4 over Brunswick. They then suffered their first defeat, a 4-3, OT loss to Edward Little, a very strong Class A program out of the North.

In short: Things looked good for the team early. A number of further defeats came their way, however, as their schedule entered its more difficult stretches. Greely bettered the Rams twice, for example, as did York.

The Rams traveled to Norway Savings Bank Arena in the first round of the postseason, where they faced off with – and defeated – Gray-New Gloucester/Poland/Oak Hill/Leavitt.

Ten seniors leave the team behind: Giuseppi Brown, Ben Nault, Trevor Loubier, Joey Curesky, Nick Gray, Alex O’Connor, Tanner Garand, Tyler Weeks, Dom Lorello and Trevor Gray.

Girls Hockey
Nat Germond’s girls (a co-op with Gorham and Massabesic) took another step forward this year: Though they picked up just three wins (for 3-14-1 overall) and landed outside the playoffs, they nevertheless improved on last year, when they finished 0-18. The team topped Mt. Ararat/Morse 6-4 to open the season; they tied York/Traip/Marshwood two games later, 2-2 in OT. They battered Biddeford/TA/Wells 8-3 after that, and trumped Bunswick 5-4 in OT midway through the season.

Several seniors from the three schools now depart the program: Mackenzie Buteau, Isis Adams, Anna Rathbun, Aleyxa Reekie, CC Cochran and Emma Steinbuchel. Those are tough losses for the lineup to absorb, but with a little luck the team will take yet another step forward next year.

Boys Indoor Track
Jason Tanguay’s boys finished seventh at Southwesterns and ninth at States, buoyed upwards through the standings in large part by young talent. Andrew Farr won three events for the Rams at Southwesterns (the jr. 55, 200 and 400) and Ryan Gendron won one (the High Jump). Both boys went on to compete at New Englands, and Farr also competed at Nationals.

Girls Indoor Track
Many of John Caterina’s girls contributed to a second-place finish for their team at Southwesterns and a seventh place finish at States. Most notably, Kate Tugman excelled in the distance events; she also competed at New Englands and Nationals. Emma Green, Evelyn Kitchen, Sydney Connolly and others also proved key to the outfit’s successes.
