NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Bowdoin College women’s outdoor track and field team placed second, while the men took fourth in impressive showings at the Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College on Saturday.
The Polar Bear women were runners-up with 108 points, trailing only Middlebury’s 116 in a strong 20-team field.
The men recorded 66 points, finishing behind only WPI (97.5), Middlebury (85.5) and New Haven (73) in a competitive 24-team field.
In the women’s meet, Bowdoin took a 1-2-3 finish in the women’s 100-meter run, led by Brittney McKinley (12.50), followed closely by Morgen Gallagher (12.68) and Samantha Schaefer (12.72). McKinley also took second in the 200 (26.04)
Sara Ory won the 400 hurdles in a time of 1:04.29 and anchored the winning 4 x 400 relay team that included Emma Beane, Gallagher and Schaefer who posted a school-record time of 3:57.05. The 4 x 100 relay team of Gallagher, McKinley, Angela Wallace and Samantha Schaefer also took first in a time of 49.05
Lydia Pitts set a personal record in winning the triple jump with a distance of 36-06.50.
In the men’s meet, the The Polar Bears also had multiple winners, including Joseph Staudt’s first-place finish in the high jump with a height of 6-00.75.
Bowdoin went 1-2 in the long jump with Mason Freeman earning the win at 21-09.50, just edging teammate Reed Foster.
Other strong finishes for the Polar Bears included Yaw Sekere taking third in the 100 (10.99) and anchoring the third-place 4 x 100 team that also included Freeman, Owen Tuck and Troy Green, finishing in 42.50.
The Polar Bear women will be in action this upcoming Friday and Saturday at the Aloha relays at Bates College in Lewiston.
The men host the Maine State Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.
Baseball
Bowdoin fell dropped all three games of a weekend series at Tufts, dropping the Polar Bears to 3-17-1 overall, 3-6 NESCAC East.
After falling in a tight 7-6 game on Saturday, the teams returned for Sunday doubleheader.
In the opener, Elias Varinos gave the Jumbos a 5-4 win with an RBI triple in the sixth.

Bowdoin received a home run by Ben Suski, giving the Polar Bears a 4-2 lead in the fourth.
The Polar Bears ended the weekend with a 16-0 setback in the nightcap.
Brandon Lopez and Matt Nakamoto each doubled in the loss.
Bowdoin is slated to host Thomas College today at 4:30 p.m.
Men’s tennis
Bowdoin split a pair of NESCAC contests, defeating Hamilton, 9-0, on Saturday and falling to Amherst, 5-4, on Sunday.
Boewdoin (12-2) led Amherst, 4-0, but the Mammoths rallied to win the final five singles matches to improve to 12-2.
The Polar Bears swept doubles play. Grant Urken/Jerry Jiang cruised 8-2 at No. 1 and Justin Patel/Oscar Yang were not far behind at No. 3 (8-3). The duo of Justin Wang /Evan Fortier completed the sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 2.
Jiang was the only Polar Bear to earn a singles win, going 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.
Bowdoin, which hosts Middlebury in a rematch of last year’s Division III national championship on Saturday, rolled to an easy win over Hamilton for its eighth straight victory.
The fourth-ranked Polar Bears sprinted out to a 3-0 lead in doubles, then rode a solid showing in singles.
Women’s lacrosse
Bowdoin failed to overcome an early deficit in a 19-11 loss to Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears saw their five-game winning streak come to an end as they fell to 7-5 (4-4 NESCAC). The Cardinals improved to 11-2 (6-2 NESCAC).
Wesleyan opened the game on an 8-1 run, as Abby Manning keyed the run with a trio of goals to give the hosts the early edge.
Bowdoin got consecutive goals from Katie Miller and Eliza Denious, but the Cardinals maintained a six-goal lead, 11-5, at halftime.
The Cardinals opened the second half on a 4-1 surge as back-to-back goals from Caitlin Wood pushed the lead to nine goals 15-6, with 22:03 to go.
Miller had five goals in the loss, while Kara Finnerty chipped in three.
Bowdoin will look to bounce back on Wednesday night when the Polar Bears host Endicott at 7 p.m.
Men’s lacrosse
Wesleyan outscored Bowdoin, 9-2, in the second half of a 13-4 victory on Saturday afternoon at Whittier Field.
The Cardinals improved to 10-2 (6-2 NESCAC) with the win, while the Polar Bears fell to 6-7 (2-6 NESCAC).
The teams played a tight first half before the Cardinals used a big third quarter surge to put the game out of reach.
The Cardinals scored the first two goals of the game, but Bowdoin replied with a pair to tie the contest at 2-2 with 8:46 left in the first period.
Ronan Jacoby paced the win with four goals and two assists for Wesleyan.
Brad Ingersoll led Bowdoin with a pair of goals in the setback.
The Polar Bears visit Williams this upcoming Saturday at 1 p.m.
