Topsham – Loving mother and devoted wife, Martha Shoemaker “Marty” Meacham passed away at home in Topsham, Maine Wednesday, May 22. Marty was born in Chicago, Illinois to Albert Moore and Mildred Silsbee Shoemaker. Her father’s work as an architect took them to Westport, Connecticut where she graduated from Staples High School. She attended William Smith College for a year and received her degree from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois where she majored in journalism. She held editorial and public relations positions at the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston and Union College and Emma Willard School in the Albany, NY area. Later she worked as Librarian for the Massachusetts Avenue Reading Room and in the General Publications Department for First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, MA.

Marty was active in church work throughout her life and served in many capacities in branch churches of Christ, Scientist in Delmar, New York and Brunswick, Maine and as a local member of The Mother Church in Boston. She was also active in the New York State Council of Churches in Albany.

Upon retirement, Marty moved to Maine where she later met and married Wil Meacham. They spent nineteen happy years together and created beautiful homes that were filled with love and laughter. Together Marty and Wil were active in their Highland Green and Oak Hill neighborhoods. Their days were filled with swimming at Bowdoin College pool, coffee and cookies at Wild Oats, outings to Reid State Park and Popham Beach, boating picnics, art museums, performances at Portland Stage and Maine State Music Theater as well as a variety of activities with the Association of Bowdoin Friends. A favorite tradition was “mini ‘moon” getaway trips to places like Monhegan and Inn by the Sea. Marty was also one of the original members of a Brunswick area ladies’ book club that has been meeting for 20 years.

Marty was previously married to the late Frederick William Memmott III and the late Stanley Gordon. She will be most missed by her brother Albert M. Shoemaker III of Aiken, SC; daughter Wendy (David) Memmott DesAutels of Traverse City, MI; brother-in-law James (Karen) Memmott of Old Wethersfield, CT; nephew Justin (Erin) Memmott of Washington, DC; stepson Geith St. John Fraser of Sacramento, CA; stepbrother John (Mary) Schelling of Orinda, CA; stepbrother George (Joyce) Schelling of Orland, ME.

A family memorial service will be held later this year.
