Topsham – Loving mother and devoted wife, Martha Shoemaker “Marty” Meacham passed away at home in Topsham, Maine Wednesday, May 22. Marty was born in Chicago, Illinois to Albert Moore and Mildred Silsbee Shoemaker. Her father’s work as an architect took them to Westport, Connecticut where she graduated from Staples High School. She attended William Smith College for a year and received her degree from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois where she majored in journalism. She held editorial and public relations positions at the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston and Union College and Emma Willard School in the Albany, NY area. Later she worked as Librarian for the Massachusetts Avenue Reading Room and in the General Publications Department for First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, MA.

Upon retirement, Marty moved to Maine where she later met and married Wil Meacham. They spent nineteen happy years together and created beautiful homes that were filled with love and laughter. Together Marty and Wil were active in their Highland Green and Oak Hill neighborhoods. Their days were filled with swimming at Bowdoin College pool, coffee and cookies at Wild Oats, outings to Reid State Park and Popham Beach, boating picnics, art museums, performances at Portland Stage and Maine State Music Theater as well as a variety of activities with the Association of Bowdoin Friends. A favorite tradition was “mini ‘moon” getaway trips to places like Monhegan and Inn by the Sea. Marty was also one of the original members of a Brunswick area ladies’ book club that has been meeting for 20 years.
