Courage House open house

Courage House, opening this month to provide sober living for former prisoners on probation, will host an open house and barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at 24 School St.

Tours of the house will be available. 

Donations are also welcome at this time. Courage House needs bureaus, bedside tables, desks, lamps, alarm clocks, board games, books, DVDs, folding chairs and men’s clothing. Staff will gladly unload donations from vehicles.

Chadbourne dies at 66

The Gorham community this week mourns the loss of Demetria Chadbourne, who passed away on May 29. A funeral and burial was Tuesday, according to her obituary.

Chadbourne, a widely known Realtor, leaves her husband, Dennis Chadbourne, and two children, Aaron Chadbourne and Dr. Kyra Chadbourne.

She was a former Gorham High School teacher and coach.

Her obituary said she taught at Massabesic and Cape Elizabeth before becoming the physical eduaction teacher at Gorham High School. She coached field hockey at Gorham, winning three state championships and five Western Maine titles. She was inducted into the Maine Field Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.

Teachers award scholarships

Amanda Cooper, president of Gorham Teachers Association, last week presented scholarships of $400 to each of eight graduating seniors.

They are Caitlin Chasse, Maiya Christiansen-Carlson, Cooper Lyons, Tom Nelson, Jordan Perkins, Anna Rathbun, Leah Scontras and Bruce
Wyatt.

“The money for our annual scholarship awards is raised by the members of the Gorham Teachers association through our local dues and fundraisers,” Cooper said in an email to the American Journal. “Scholarships are awarded to the graduating children of members of the association, and/or students entering the education profession.”

Historical heads up

Kelly Dearborn will present a Gorham Historical Society program when it meets at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 10, in the municipal center, 75 South St.

Dearborn’s topic will be the society’s “Archive Collection,” new additions, donations and unidentified photos.
