Elaine “Lamie” Luce

SCARBOROUGH – Elaine “Lamie” Luce, 84, died at 3:40 p.m. on Feb. 6, 2021, at Ledgewood Manor, in Windham, after a long battle with dementia.

Lamie was a 1954 graduate of Deering High School in Portland, and attended Amherst College in Massachusetts. Lamie is remembered for her beloved horse, Melody, in her earliest years (who her granddaughter is named after), Camp Laughing Loon in Waterboro, playing the trumpet, Maine Bureau of Taxation from which she retired, years of snowmobiling in Augusta, beating her brothers and her sons in foot races, 10 years in Venice, Fla., and finally finishing her race in Scarborough, where she was close to family.

Her latest years were often highlighted by a friendly compliment concerning her watch, her shirt, her belt or some other clothing from which she would immediately “Give you the shirt of her back” and present it to the person as a gift.

Lamie was an energetic supporter of the Downs Syndrome Network and her grandson Zachery. She went on many “Buddy Walks” in his honor with her late husband, John. Perhaps her last joy was being wheeled around Ledgewood Manor by Zachery, both grinning ear to ear.

She spent many years serving at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Saco, as well attending many local churches, and visiting with family, always enjoying the friendly fellowship.

She was predeceased by her loving and ever patient husband, John Luce, in March 2020; as well as by her brothers, Ronnie and Lloyd Holmes.

She is survived by her sister, “Jackie” Nevins of Gainesville, Fla., her brother, Wilbur Holmes of Scarborough, and Bob Holmes of Scarborough; her daughter, Wendy Cain and her husband Craig, her sons, Ed O’Brion and his wife Leeanne, and Tom O’Brion and his wife Roberta. She was a happy grandmother of Wendy’s children Melody and Shaylene; Ed’s children, Ben, Hannah, Ruth, Molly, Emily, Abby, Rose and Noah; and Tom’s children Dan, Ellyn, and Zachery. She was also the proud great-grandmother of Logan, Mason, Jacob, Mathew, Justin, Lily, Clare, Dezso, Caitlin, Evelinah, Maria, Micah, Adeline, Wade, and Caedan.

A celebration of life, and graveside service is in hopes to be held later this year in Portland to honor her life.
