Betty Lanoue

TOPSHAM – Betty Lanoue lost her battle with cancer on Feb. 10, 2021, with her children by her side. Betty will be remembered for her sense of humor, strength, and positive attitude.

Betty was born in Johnston, Rhode Island, to William and Helen McLeod on July 13, 1933. She lived there with her parents and older sister, Jean. She attended Tufts University, and received her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. She married Richard “Pete” on June 30, 1956. Together they raised a family of three children. They were married for 57 years.

Betty excelled at propping up her family and supporting them through the many passions and difficulties of their lives. Whether that was supporting Pete through starting a business, she made it her mission to improve the lives of others.

Betty and Pete lived in many different places until they settled in California, returning to Maine after retirement. She was always a New Englander at heart.

Betty was passionate about knitting and when she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found at the children’s hospital or food pantry volunteering. She also enjoyed playing cards, making puzzles, and gardening. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church.

We will miss her greatly.

She was excited to move into the Lodge at Highlands. She wanted to have interactions with others and be involved in activities. She loved playing bridge and cribbage with her friends and doing puzzles in the hallway.

She is survived by her sister, Jean McLeod Dill, her children, Suzanne Lanoue Barnes, Robert Lanoue and wife Sandy, Helen Lanoue Baldwin and husband Scott; her grandchildren, Andrew Barnes, Ben Barnes and wife Quinn, Rachel “Jordan” Lanoue, Sawyer Baldwin, and her great-granddaughter, Bella Barnes.

She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Donald Lanoue, and sister-in-law, Anne “Cokey” Webber and her husband Bob.

She was preceded in death by her father, William McLeod, her mother, Helen McLeod, her husband, Richard Lanoue, and her sister-in-law, Joy Lanoue.
